2009 was een jubileumjaar voor mij: precies 25 jaar geleden begon ik platen te kopen. Zelfs vandaag in het digitale tijdperk gaat mijn voorkeur nog steeds uit naar de fysieke release. Meer nog: ik kocht nooit voordien zo veel platen als in 2009. Dankzij de zwakke dollar kocht ik dit jaar maar liefst om en bij de 400 platen. Meer dan de helft van dat aantal waren oudere releases en kocht ik spotgoedkoop bij Amerikaanse webshops als cdbaby, villagerecords, lonestarmusic, signaturesounds en scdistribution. En verder kocht ik ook nog koopjes bij Europese webshops als play, cosmox, glitterhouse, luckydice en bluerose records. De andere helft waren nieuwe of recente releases. Opvallend is dat geen enkele nieuwe release een miskoop of tegenvaller was. Het stortregende dit jaar dan ook goeie tot uitstekende platen. Iedere week hoorde ik wel minstens één ‘plaat van het jaar’. Het werd in de zomer al duidelijk dat een cd top 50 van 2009 samenstellen geen gemakkelijke opgave zou worden. En dat werd het ook niet, want na september nam de stortvloed aan geweldige nieuwe releases niet af. Ik heb dan ook heel wat selectiecriteria moeten toepassen die ik anders nooit gebruik om tot een top 50 te komen. Releases verschenen in de tweede helft van 2008 die ik dit jaar pas ontdekte en kocht, vielen onverbiddelijk af. Dé grote afwezige in mijn top 50 is daardoor Chris Eckman met zijn magistrale album ‘The last side of the mountain’. Daarnaast werden ook live albums en box sets weggefilterd, en gelukkig maar, want anders stonden de ‘Remasters’ van The Beatles op nummer 1. Zodoende grijpt ook Neil Young zowel met z’n box set ‘Archives vol. 1 : 1963-1972’ als met zijn live album ‘Dreamin’ man live ‘92’ naast een nieuwe nummer één plaats in mijn jaarlijst. Of bezet Neil met z’n nieuwe studioalbum ‘Fork in the road’ straks toch nog mijn nummer één positie? We zullen zien. Wat wél al zeker is, is dat geen enkele Belgische release mijn top 50 haalde dit jaar. Ik kocht dan ook slechts 6 Belgische platen, en hoewel dat best goeie platen zijn vond ik geen enkele goed genoeg om een plaatsje in mijn top 50 te gunnen. Voor ik met mijn top 50 begin, vermeld ik eerst de waslijst “eervolle vermeldingen” die mijn top 50 van 2009 om diverse redenen niet gehaald hebben.
